Meet the Team – Derm McNelis

At E.B. Horn, we consider our customers to be family. We pride ourselves on the longstanding relationships we have built over the years and that would not be possible without our team. You may recognize his trademark suspenders and big smile but get to know Derm McNelis with our latest Meet the Team feature.

How long have you been working at EB Horn?

I started on April 1, 1986. April Fools!

What is your favorite part about working at EBH?

I wasn’t sure what to expect but from day one I felt comfortable. This is a very family oriented environment. We have all raised children together, the owners and employees.

Over the past four decades, what trends have you seen stand the test of time?

There have been many changes over the years. Our neighborhood, Downtown Crossing, has gone through tough days and many great days. In the industry, I think fashion jewelry is not as popular as it once was, the trend is towards diamond jewelry – the bigger the better. That said, lab grown diamonds have grown in popularity and can suit a number of styles and budgets, it boils down to a personal preference. For me, personally, I like a natural diamond. Current trends I am seeing a lot of include anniversary rings and fairly simple necklaces, timeless pieces.

Personal style is important. What do you consider when helping customers find the perfect piece?

I always try to get to know the client. When I can get on a personal level, that opens up the conversation and gives me a better idea what they actually are looking for. Sometimes, what a client says they want is not what they actually want and it is my job to help bridge the gap.

What is your favorite type of jewelry to sell – and why?

I really do love selling diamonds. It’s the beginning. The best is yet to come.

Do you have a special or sentimental piece of your own you can tell us about?

I bought my wife a BIGGER diamond after 25 years of marriage. She deserves it. A funny holiday story – my wife does all of the shopping for our family and my job is to buy a piece of jewelry for each of my two daughters. I thought I should change it up one year and asked the women in the office what I should go for and then got a pair of boots. It did not go over well and I was told “Dad, we look forward to your presents from EB Horn!”. Lesson learned!
